Sailor Saturn

Painting The Eyes

This is Sailor Saturn's face after base coating with a flesh paint.  The headband was painted with a bronze metallic lacquer paint from Humbrol and highlighted with gold.  The cheeks were highlighted with a tint of blush by mixing the flesh tone paint with pink to provide a slightly redder look.  The highlighting was done with the airbrush using the fine tip. After the cheeks were colored a light coat of a slightly whitened flesh was sprayed over the cheeks to blend the colors and give a color variation to the basic flesh tone.
This is the face after the whites of the eyes are painted.  It was helpful that the position of the pupils was cast in the resin which is why the complete eye is not painted white.
This is the face after the eye color has been painted.  I used a pearlescent mauve color on the top and a pearlescent pink color on the bottom.  The paints were slightly blended together where they met.
The black highlights have now been painted around the eyes and the eye lashes have been drawn.  Although this looks easy it is not.  It is quite hard to paint fine detailed lines without making a mistake.  Once the brush slips, you can kiss your work goodbye.  If you look closely at the picture you can see that the black lines around the eyes are not consistent in thickness and size.  This is repaired later when the head is fully assembled.
The dark pupil of the eyes have now been painted.  I used a metallic dark blue color as I wanted something a little different from pure black.
The last step is to add the white highlights to the eye.  These highlights give direction and character to the figure.  There is a drop of pure gloss white put in the upper corner of the eye and a slight reflective triangle is drawn on the lower part of the eye.
